bio (0823) - Gen: gene therapy
no teacher today, so did a bit of reading on my own.
genetic therapy is used to replace or correct genes that express negative traits.
it is mostly used for cancer cells, but can also be used to treat infectious diseases and hereditary diseases such as cystic fibrosis.
i was wondering how they go about inserting the genes to multiple cells, or if they insert it to one. it's quite genius actually, it's called trans.. something (LAWL i'll check later) and they use viruses to spread the new gene to other cells.

and with this, i make my triumphant return to note blogging.
so to begin with.. MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and it produces high resolution images.
it works on the basis of strong superconductors, they produce an immensely strong magnetic field (x30000 that of earth and x200 that of a fridge magnet) which is why hazards involved with MRI are caused by metal objects int he room (eg chairs) or if patients have metal plates in their body
alright so here we go:
atoms make up our body, and each atom is composed of smaller charged particles, which are constantly spinning. this spin creates a magnetic field along the axis (right hand grip rule), the spin moment.
in each nucleus, there are protons and neutrons, and this can occur with both. in an atom with an even amount of protons, the magnetic fields will cancel each other out (they face opposite directions because it is energetically favourable) in an atom with an odd number, they all pair up, the remaining field is the net magnetic field. (mind you this occurs with neutrons as well, but they cannot pair up with protons)
now usually, all the net magnetic fields go off in different directions, but when placed in the superconductor magnetic field, they mostly all align in the same direction, at a slight angle, and it rotates in the direction of its axis around the magnetic field, ie. it precesses.

ag (0617) - SFP: water management
water quality is an issue, things to look out for are sediment runoff, excessive nutrients eg. from animal waste or fertilizers, salinity problems and pesticide runoff.
water quantity is an issue especially during times of drougt. irrigation has to be carefully planned, since if done irresponsibly, a majority of the water can be lost through evaporation.
government legislations are put into place to help manage the use of water. water licenses are required to extract water from catchments, but it's allocations that matter. allocations dictate how much water a farmer can use during a year based on their license. sometimes they might not be allocated any at all, but have to pay license fees anyway

his apparatus was a cathode ray tube with a screen, and he had both an electric field and a magnetic field to focus the cathode rays. with this he found the velocity of the rays, knowing that:

for magnetic fields:

therefore
qE = qvB
v = E/B
when these weren't there, however, he noticed that the rays produced a circular pattern, and he concluded that this was due to a centripetal force.

the land capability system is a method of classification for land for agricultural use.
it ranges from class I to class VIII,
with class I to III suitable for cultivation
IV to VI suitable for grazing
and VII and VIII not suitable at all.

the land is classified based on factors such as climate, soil, fertility, slope and drainage

louis pasteur was a french chemist who studied the shape of organic crystals. he discovered that diseases were caused by micro-organisms, and this was known as GERM THEORY OF DISEASE. pasteur was the guy who eliminated the theory of spontaneous generation, which was previously believed that maggots and things appeared out of nowhere. he also created the process of pasteurisation, which in ag we have learned that is the method of heating liquid to high temperatures to kill microbes.

090610 - Physics
Finally Started the Ideas and Implementations topic.
Mainly stuff on CRTs (Cathode Ray Tubes) today.
Cathode = Negative
Anode = Positive
Electrons accelerate from the cathode to the anode (i think) and any ions produced accelerate towards the cathode.
TVs, electron microscopes, and photocopiers use CRTS.
Electric and magnetic fields are used to deflect cathode rays (the electrons).
The right hand palm rule works for CONVENTIONAL current only - opposite the direction of the electrons.
Thats pretty much it.
There seems to be a serious lack of DEDICATION affecting this blog.
We'll see if this becomes the final post.

phys (0513) - M&G: transmission
talking about how electricity is transferred from the power plant to the home.
it comes out from the plant at like 12000V, then using transformer is pumped up to like 240000V (keeping in mind that it's AC, which is why it can be transformed) this high voltage is necessary coz if resistance remains the same but voltage is increased, current decreases, and when current decreases, heat decreases (heat is produced when a current flows through something)
the electricity is carried on large structure thingos, high off the ground to prevent people getting shocked and stuff (electricity can jump at such high voltages)
the electricity is transformed down to 8000 in closer, more local areas, and transformed again near homes so that it gets down to 240V, which could still be fatal, but there isn't as much risk of the electricity jumping.
the electricity can't go through the pole because the pole would heat up and people who touch them could get electricuted. so, the electricity is diverted; isolated away from the pole, they are detoured around with other cables, and ceramic discs are used to prevent the electricity from getting to the posts (ceramics cant hold water and cant conduct electricity anyway) the higher the voltage, the more ceramic discs basically.

First of all, im surprised some people didnt know about the hsc online thing, i suppose its good for english or whatevs.
that in2physics textbook scan however is still quite helpful
ishraq also seems to recommend the newer excel hsc physics book,
turns out they actually brought out one for the new syllabus and like in2physics,
its just following dot points
of course in2physics is mr pitts recommendation one time i asked him so who knows.
actually, like, after physics, or any subject, dont be afraid to just ask your teacher questions that youd test your friend on or something cause they are seriously good at it no joke

ext2 (0427) - day 16: presentation
i've been really thinking about my position in ext2 lately.
the time constraints are tiring me out, but it wouldn't be so much of an issue if i wasn't dying in physics. giving up one frees up time for the other, but the question is which. mostly i've decided i'll let go of physics since i assume it'll be at the bottom of my 10 units, but students in the ext2 class have been dropping like flies, i think we've lost 4 within the first 2 weeks of this term, strong combatitants too, so i've been wondering where it is i stand.
this week's lesson was about pulling apart people's major works to see what they're doing right/wrong. i volunteered to be aired next week so that i know where i'm at, so i guess the dud film shall be aired.
i don't know what else i can say here.
i intend to finish the script asap so i can show many people (english teachers and priests alike) to test both its meaning and presentation are effective. i have a number of other alternative ideas that i have to talk about with our teacher though.
tuesday will reveal the truth though, i also must finish my report.

phys (0422) - M&G: induction
a man named orsted figured that moving a current next to a compass had an effect on it.
another dude called faraday took this idea that magnetism and electricity were related and experimented with it. he moved a magnet towards and near a coil and realized that it produced a current (shown by a galvanometer)
thing is, current is only induced if there's a change of flux (that is, magnetic field strength) so using a simple DC power supply would not be the same as AC. alternatively, stationary magnets wont do anything, it has to be like, moving.
a generator looks like a motor but is basiclaly the opposite.

the point of inflection has a tangent with gradient = 0, ie. is a stationary point.
it occurs for x^3 graphs, where on both sides of the stationary point, y increases or decreases depending on the formula.
to test for this, we draw up a table and test for the number that results in f'(x) = 0, and then for a number higher than the x value that resulted in that, and lower than that.

bio (0422) - BoL: DNA revision
well we finished the experiment today too, we wrote down results. essentially the plants that were watered grew many, large leaves, as opposed to pretty much none on the unwatered plants. also the ones that got more sunlight had bigger leaves.
after that we just did a bit of revision on DNA.
deoxyribonucleic acid, is composed of nucleotides. a nucleotide is composed of a sugar (deoxyribose) a nitrogen base (adenine, thymine, cytosine and guanine) and a phosphate that bonds the sugar to another sugar.
RNA is pretty much the same, but unlike DNA that is a double helix, RNA is a single strand, and it has uracil instead of thymine.
random note: humans have been around for like a million years, and cyanobacteria like dominiated for liek 2 billion years, dinosaurs for like 400 million.
mitosis produces 2 daughter cells taht are identical, and have a set of chromosomes each (46 for people) these are somatic cells.
the opposite of somatic cells are gametic cells, or gametes (sex cells) they only possess half the amount of chromosomes each (23) and they combine to create the offspring's genes and stuff. this is what causes variation, and hence, evolution.

math (0421) - GeoDer: increase/decrease
this is essentially a continuation of yesterday's post.
just a few things to add.
maximum point is generally the staionary point or turning point tht is of highest y value. called "local maximum" if the graph is ongoing (ie. with arrows) but if it terminates then it's the absolute maximum.
same goes for minimum, which is the lowest.
interesting thing is that if one differentiates a straight line, the resulting graph would be a straight horizontal line, and it's y value would be equal to the gradient of the line, which was differentiated.

ext2 (0420) - day 15: film
i haven't written or posted anything all holidays, even though i considered it, even thought of what i was going to write, but in the end other things got in the way. so ultimately this week's reflection is about the holidays as well as today's lesson, which are linked anyway.
a real bother was taht i couldn't get my hands on the priest in charge of the church where i wnted to film some of my scenes. i went on the first thursday of the holidays and found out he'd be gone for the week, and he wasn't there either on the following thursday either (the day before filming) but i did manage to get on the phone with him on friday night (after filming) and got the ok.
in the meantime.. is houldn't have left it so late to work on the script, i should've at least allowed my actors to learn it rather than showing them on the day. one also could not make it so i had to bring in a sub from ext2 class, i knew this was gonna be the first take anyway, and we would re-do it all anyway, this was all just for test.
in the end i didn't script the whole thing, since we wouldn't be in the chruch anyway, so i made an alternative script (not as long though) and it was tough not being able to write dialogue between teenage girls. so i asked around for some help, and got some, in fact i got quite a bit of other insight also.
this holidays was also useful for watching and reading other texts taht helped me, mind you.
anyway, on the day of filming, my tripod was misplaced so i went ahead with handheld, but my actors arrived late, half an hour and about an hour respectively. but ultimately, we got all the shots done from the script down, but next time it'd be a good idea that they see the script prior to the day. much prior to the day.
i edited the film on the weekend before school commenced, but i didn't get it finished due to other assignments. but so far, things are looking well.
noone has given any negative feedback, at least none of the people i shwoed yesterday (including the teacher) i was afraid it would be too cliche or too angst, or both. but that's also what i'm afraid of. noone is being particularly critical of it, but i suppose we should wait for my day to be analyzed by everyone. but perhaps it's good because it just seems like a regular movie.. i dunno.
the teacher gave quite a bit of advice. for one, i should make a script then find location to suit it, instead of finding location then scripting based on that. secondly, the teacher has a boom mike if i need it, if wind is a problem, or echos.
i did have this idea about deaf and blind people though.. but i've already begun with this. perhaps i should ask around before i get too deep into this. but time is running out. only 7 weeks left.
